There was a slight problem to my most recent Lulu publication, The Saga of Sam and Cilantro. Will it be back online soon? A delivery tonight from Fed Ex will tell. -Stay tuned!
update: -there’s been a problem with the printer. once fixed, the book will be back online.
After 2 years, a new book is done. It’s the longest book by Meredith Barrueto and only available in hardback. I created 23 full page spreads for this, and in my opinion: they aren’t bad. Check it out!

Six High School drop-outs and a few extras compete to be the best bar circuit cover band in their small town. Performing covers of today’s hottest Alt/Rock hits as well as some new takes on old classics, these kids battle other local performers, each other, and themselves in a music filled comedy/drama like you’ve never seen (unless you watch Glee)!
Pilot episode:
Gretchen and Rodney are powerhouse competitors in their local Karaoke bar. But, when Bartender Al dares them to take their skills to the next level: All bets are off! Recruiting musicians from all walks of life, these two bands of misfits duke it out in a battle never seen since The Revolution fought The Time!
Life is tough in rural small-town USA as six high schooler students and a few extras all have part time jobs in the local glue factory. Most hide their talents away, but an entrepreneurial foreman brings them together to shake things up. Things will never be normal again! Performing country music’s best, these kids take to the rodeo-circuit in the hopes of making it to Nashville. Struggling with real-life responsibilities and aspirations of greatness, these kids have a lot to overcome. Hilarious and heartbreaking, this show is sure to touch you.
In a good way.
Pilot episode:
Dixon and Chet both work in the glue factory, but at break-time they love to sing duets in the horse-knuckle storage room. When Foreman Hank finds out about them, he sets up a country music band with other employees that also have unexpected hidden talents. This motley-crew of musicians take the rodeo circuit by storm!
Any casting ideas?
American Girl by yours truly. Click here if the video doesn’t show.
After reading this article I became inspired to create my own design/illustration principles.
Here’s four I came up with. Do any of you have design principles?
Project Personality – The work must show the personality and character of myself as well as those I am working with. If the vision is not my own, try to show the character of those whose it is.
Collaborate – When working with others, never take a back seat to the design process. Always feel like you are contributing in a positive way.
Work Efficiently – Work more efficiently, not faster. Reuse design whenever possible without running it into the ground. Good design lasts, bad design lingers.
Animate – Bring life and experience to the work. Works should be able to breath, move, and speak to their audience.
In case the link above is broken, check out Functioning Form at http://www.lukew.com/ff/ .
I’ve been playing with this “design” off and on for a while. Meaning, I come across it when I clean up old files, open it, and either add to it, or decide I might do something with it later. It’s not very good (in fact, it’s not very good-in theory, it is also difficult to appreciate), but I enjoy working on it because it distracts me from cleaning out old files.
It’s inspired by my 1980’s childhood influences: trapper keeper covers and Journey album covers and hot rods and the like.
But it needed some focus. I rattled my brain for ideas for things to stick in the middle of this. And here’s what I came up with: something that looks like it should be airbushed on the side of a van.
Then I thought, “This must be what it looks like when one is caught in the Death Star’s tractor beam!” So I added the Falcon-which is the only ship I can recall that particular device being used against.
Then I thought, “Oh, geez! I just unintentionally created my first piece of fan art!”
So, I had to do what any self-respecting fanboy dork has to do in this situation: blog about it.

And, just to take it one final step further:
–
Some more images from Ramon and Snowflake.
Flying kites on deck:
I reused the parrots layers for this page to create the cover of the book.
Fishing:
This page gave me some problems and I made tons of sketches before I found my final treatment. How do I make a parrot look like he’s fishing? I don’t. I threw him in the water, rod and reel, and fished him out and then drew the picture.
This sketch was made completely out of proportion and didn’t quite fit on the page right.
After manipulating the image, Ramon and his head are still too large I think, but the distance between the two figures is forgiving of that.
Falling on deck:
I love drawing birds feet. They’re so cool! Snowflakes feet are rather dainty-it’s like she has four small worms at the end of her feet while Ramon’s is more like a large raptor’s.
You’ll notice the same background of the sky and water in the last post through the galley window.
I hope you enjoyed the pics!
